What drives an experienced sailor owner who after having developed a working activity with excellent results at some point in his life, decides to sell his established industry to venture into the construction of a large 40 meter long (130 feet) sailing boat to be used for long cruises and for sailing competitions if not the true and authentic passion for the sea and sailing.
This owner already owns a smaller sailboat called My Song 84 feet long (25 meters) very famous among sailing enthusiasts for having won many regattas including the extraordinary Maxi Rolex Cup in the Racing-Cuising category.
The new My Song because it retains the name of other boats of the same owner including the 25-meter My Song, was built in the prestigious Finnish boatyard of Baltic Yacht. While the design of the water lines was carried out by the American study of Reichel and Pugh, the same who designed the My Song of 25 meters while the deck and interior design was taken care of by the Milanese study Nauta Design.
In practice it was chosen the best for the construction of this boat the final result could only be exceptional. In fact, it is currently one of the most beautiful sailing boats in the world and among the most technologically advanced of the moment.
Studied, not to be too heavy, its weight is about one hundred tons are nothing compared to the size and size of the boat including 41 tons are the weight of the ballast.
This was possible because for the construction of the hull was used technologically advanced composite material with a high percentage of carbon. A special engine propulsion system allows the boat to advance even without the sail system with a propeller foot that descends when the engine needs to be used and salt hiding inside the hull when it is necessary to sail in this way the resistance to the movement is the minimum possible by improving performance. This installed system is called “retractable Propulsion System” by Baltic Yacht.
The boat is equipped with a retractable keel that can go from 7 to 4 meters of draft. The My Song lifting keel, at 36.25 tons, comes from the world of racing yachts. It tapers from top to bottom, which improves hydrodynamic performance and reduces the wet surface, saving about two seconds per mile in straight speed, says Nauta Yachts project director, Martino Majno.
Regarding the structure and equipment of the sail system, the owner can choose between two basic configurations between the regatta and the cruise. The basic sail plan is composed of a 530 square meter mainsail; genoa 380 square meters; gennaker 1,300 square meters. With regatta trim the boat can sail at speeds higher than the actual wind present at that moment because these big boats manage to build apparent wind and therefore great speed even in close-hauled sailing.
With this boat we have chosen to build a simple flat and clean 8.52 meters wide deck that starts around the center of the boat and continues almost in compliance to the stern with a little intrusive tuga and where there are only the necessary things for the management of the boat. We tried to find a compromise solution to build a boat suitable for long cruises and at the same time competitive to win regattas.
“Our specialization is to combine these two things together, but we have never done it to this point. Never. The result was made possible by the extraordinary capabilities of the manufacturer says Mario Pedol of Nauta Yachts also adds the combination of performance, elegance, comfort and functionality is perhaps the most distinctive feature of My Song. Everything has been designed and built to be light even the cable supports and plant passages are made of carbon “. Even the electronics are perfectly hidden with clear control screens present only in front of the wheel of the helmsman. There are also portable instruments that are used by the crew during the regattas.
The interiors have a cozy, warm style, but at the same time, with a typically marine taste as requested by the owner, are characterized by the presence of a full beam saloon a large master cabin in the bow and behind this cabin is a second smaller bedroom that can also be used as a simple study. Then there are two other double cabins that are located aft of the salon.
The research of the materials used to avoid increasing the weight of the boat was very accurate. In particular, for the creation of floors and ceilings, the choice fell on a resin and linen composite, thus rediscovering the use of natural fibers.
“My vision of the last My Song was for a yacht that would be extremely light, fast and easy to handle: a true competitor of superyacht regattas,” says the boat owner, adding that this had to balance with a “welcoming interior” , comfortable and luxurious “.
All the objectives have been achieved and all the ship owner’s needs have been met. Launched in the summer of 2016 already in 2017 the first attestations of esteem arrived, in fact, the My Song 130 feet won two prizes in the ShowBoats Design Awards 2017. The award for the most innovative yacht and the one for the best Exterior Design and Styling .
It is certainly an important recognition for the Milanese Nauta Yacht Design studio and the study by Reichel and Pugh.
Now we just have to wait until the new My Song equals and exceeds the number of sports victories of the older homonymous even if in a different sailing class. In this regard, the shipowner has issued the following declaration. “The new boat is challenging and challenging, of course it takes time to get to know it and be carried out at its best”. Like all purebred horses born to run, then win.
It has been around for thirty years that luxury cruise holidays have become a massive vacation through the construction of mega larger cruise ships able to accommodate more and more passengers at once at increasingly crumbling prices to hold on to more and more intense competition in a sector that has been growing strongly since years.
An early return or if you want an alternative to mass cruise is offered by the ten luxury cruise sailboats that still lure the sea today ensuring a level of comfort and excellent service with the opportunity to take part in the wonderful corners of the world where a great cruise ship can never moor.
Also you will be able to share the common spaces of the ship such as pool bars and lounges with few people without crowding as usually happens in large ships. Among these ten sailing vessels is the Royal Clipper, the flagship of Star Clipper’s Swedish navigation company, where its design inspired the glorious Preussen to sail a magnificent 19th-century sailing ship, a five-seater yacht, nicknamed ” the Queens of the Queen’s Seas “.
Made on the shipyards of Gdańsk, it is 134 meters long, large 16 meters and 5 trees rising up to 58 meters with 42 large sails that can also exploit a light sea breeze, reaching this amazing 17-knot speed through only the big sailing system . With a gross tonnage of 5,000 tonnes it can accommodate up to 227 passengers in its 114 cabins with 106 crew members.
As her ancestor is the largest cruise ship sailing in the world and is also one of the most luxurious. It’s a sailboat not a cruise ship here you can experience an adventure. Leave everything behind to unplug and jump to a life of pleasure in full freedom like a century ago with the wind in the stern to try the traditions of sailing.
For the characteristics of this type of cruise immediately establishes a special relationship between the crew and the passengers and between the same tourists promoting a social exchange and new beautiful friendships. Obviously it is a free choice because in any case the ship has enough common spaces for those who, even for only a few days, love to avoid the company and experience this experience in perfect solitude or just with their own family.
Ideal for those who want to experience a cruise that can provide leisure moments in a very relaxed comfortable climate and want to be pampered and served by a well-organized facility on a cruise still tailor-made.
A peculiar and exciting feature is when the boat moorings to start a new cruise all passengers gather on the deck to experience the first unforgettable moments of sailing the sails seems to go back with time.
The Royal Clipper was launched in 2000, although some advanced and advanced navigation and communication systems are on board, some procedures are carried out as were the sailing vessels of the nineteenth century, such as the unloading and loading of goods that are carried out as at the time through a pulley system.
At every moment of navigation on the flanks of the ship, the most courageous passengers can choose to lie down on the suspended dolphin on the water and admire the sails while others can follow the navigational bridge all the navigation phases by observing the commander and maneuvering crew the ship does not exclude the possibility of actively contributing to the rise of sails.
Regarding the destinations, the Royal Clipper sail between the months of April and October in the Mediterranean Sea, while the other months of the year, winds the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, usually departing from Barbados .
Among the cruises in the Mediterranean is the one that departs from the port of Civitavecchia to finish in Venice after twelve days of sailing with a journey of about 2,200 km touching beautiful places that only a cruise ship can reach to enjoy the culture of the place without the the presence of thousands of tourists who land all sets as it happens in the big cruise liners.
Starting from Civitavecchia the first stop is at Ponza of the Pontine Islands and then continuing for Palmarola, tourists obviously have the chance to land at these places to visit the features. Then proceed to the south of the Mediterranean with a stop to Sorrento, where you can by ferry to visit both the beautiful island of Capri and the lovely Amalfi Coast. Continuing, you reach Sicily with a stop to Taormina crossing the Strait of Messina.
The ship in this case is also supported by the presence on board of two large diesel engines useful to ensure navigation in the absence of wind or “bonaccia” but above all to perform, if necessary, fast maneuvers such as dodging fishing boats and other boats as when crossing the close to Messina.
Arriving in Taormina, passengers have two options or explore Sicily or stay aboard and with the help of the crew to climb safely on top of a tree to enjoy the awkward panoramas of extraordinary beauty such as the Calabrian and Sicilian coasts at the same time and become stroking from the wind, listening to the noise of the sea, a truly unforgettable experience.
The cruise continues east to reach the island of Corfu in Greece, then continue up the Adriatic Sea with a pass to Montenegro’s Kotor , where the passengers have half a day to visit. Then climb again to the Adriatic to reach Rovinj (in Croatian Rovinj) Croatia and then continue for the penultimate stop at Piran in Slovenia (in Slovenian Piran), the cruise ends through the wonderful Grand Canal in Venice.
During the entire cruise the eyes will be filled with breathtaking views. At each stage you can visit the places you have reached, although for some just staying on the ship is already a time of arrival with all the entertainment, entertainment for the passengers. On the deck there are 3 small pools, an electro-hydraulic system opens the back of the ship by slipping a platform that allows you to dive directly into the water and make water sports and other dives. In addition, there is a body care spa and a piano bar for the evenings. There is also the possibility to relax in the bright interior spaces, determined by a three-story atrium where they filter light rays or bask in the sun on the outside areas.
The fine cuisine is served in an elegant dining room. The most refined menu with lobster and champagne served to celebrate the official dinner with the commander on board a memorable event that now as a solemn ritual is repeated two days after the end of each cruise.
The thrill of the sea is also offered by the sailors’ activities as sewing the sails sailed by the wind directly on board the deck outdoors, polishing the brass, climbing the master shaft for maintenance of the engine winches that explain the sails. Before the end of each cruise, the sail-handling and maintenance crew team in uniform on the bumper of the ship to photograph the passengers, showing their pride to work on a single sailing ship.
Obviously, this description refers to one of the cruises planned for Royal Clipper then there are others that vary in duration and destination throughout the year. The cost per person for the undercooked cabins ranges from $ 1,800 and reach $ 4,600 for a cabin with private staircase, master bedroom and whirlpool.
It seems that the true luxury vacation is just like a century ago in full freedom with a daring adventure spirit available to acquire new friendships.
Usually the shipowner who commissioned a sailboat asks for maximum comfort on cruising and speed for racing, but when this entrant addresses Mark Mills for the design of the hull and its water lines it mainly demands high performance in racing with only one goal to win. Mark Mills is a world renowned company specializing in the design of high performance boats for racing. That is why private shipowners who want to regatta successfully turn to him.
Just to satisfy this kind of expectation is making Mills 73 Maxi Dolphin. A new and important cruiser / 73-foot sail racer where naval architecture was designed by Mark Mills, interior design by Nauta Design. At this time he is under construction at the Maxi Dolphin yard in Erbusco (Brescia).
The new Mills 73 Maxi Dolphin Mark Mills issued the following statement: “We have developed the project in collaboration with Project Manager and Shipowner who believe in a design that is simple and lightweight. This vision, essential to obtaining the required performance, has led us to design an extremely elegant, almost waterproof blanket, absolutely clean and free, with references to all maneuvers running downwards to winches placed in the bow in front of the rudders, “says Mark Mills Made of carbon, the Mills 73 Maxi Dolphin will have a retractable keel:” This will make the most of the speed performance that can secure the “square-top” mainline, “Mills finishes.
As for the other project interpreters, we have the Nauta Design study among the most important in the world, initially designing only sailboats as well as luxurious motor yachts, while the Maxi Dolphin yacht at Erbusco is known for the use of technologies more advanced, applied to boats.
Therefore, the shipowner has turned to world-leading players in the design and construction of this new boat that will surely satisfy all his expectations effectively.
From the first rendered differs it is noted that the new Mills 73 Maxi Dolphin will be lightweight fast and easy to drive. The interiors will have a new classical style style consisting of a spacious lounge accessible easily through a cleverly disengaged staircase that includes a living area with 8 people table and a lounge with large sofa.
All surfaces are decorated with white panels in the upper parts while the lower ones are scratched oak to make all the beautiful, clean and comfortable environments. Immediately following the bow towards the bow develops mainly the sleeping area on the left we find a first guest cabin with two separate beds that on occasion I can join to become a double bed with the possibility of inserting another cot. The most forward-looking area is reserved for the owner’s suite, which features a large double bed with a cabin connected to a spacious bathroom, with double sink and separate walk-in shower. Finally, at the stern, in front of the engine room, is the third guest cabin with a double bed.
All guest cabins have their own facilities. On the stern of the central salon we find the kitchen and just after the cabin of the crew with overlapping beds. On the Mills 73 there is room for a comfortable and functional garage for a tender of 3.27 mt. Incorporating this sailboat has been designed to ensure high racing performance while at the same time ensuring maximum cruising comfort.
