Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman

Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali (the name adopted after converting to Islam) in my opinion is to be considered one of the greatest boxers of all time at least before the forced stop due to disqualification for failing to enlist to the Vietnam War having declared conscientious objector.

Cassius Clay alias Muhammad Ali (nome che ha adottato dopo essersi convertito alla religione islamica) al mio avviso è da considerare uno dei più grandi pugili di tutti i tempi almeno prima dello stop forzato dovuto alla squalifica per non essersi arruolato per la Guerra del Vietnam essendosi dichiarato obiettore di coscienza.

muhammad_ali1Allenato da Angelo Dundee, Clay arrivò a conquistare il titolo mondiale dei pesi massimi a soli ventidue anni battendo in sette riprese Sonny Listoni (Miami, 25 febbraio 1964). Aveva una tecnica particolare in sostanza non stava mai fermo ruotava come una trottola intorno agli avversari, attraverso dei saltellini  simili a una danza, molto spesso con la guardia bassa, poi colpiva e arretrava rendendo impossibile la risposta degli avversari e tutto con un’armonia e classe che era uno spettacolo vederlo boxare Molti dicono che la parabola discendente di Cassius Clay iniziò quando nel 1978 il giovane Larry Holmes lo sconfisse per K.O. tecnico all’11a ripresa. Già da quando è rientrato a boxare dopo lo stop Clay non era più lui.

Infatti già dalla prima sconfitta con Joe Frazier subita nel 1971, nello Scontro del Secolo al Madison Square Garden ,primo incontro dopo il forzoso periodo di inattività agonistica Clay non boxava come prima troppo statico sulle gambe per essere lui. Ali dopo la sconfitta con Joe Frazier voleva ritornare sul ring per dimostrare al mondo intero che ancora lui era il numero 1 e ci riuscì a tornare campione del mondo AMB solo nel 1974 mettendo al tappeto George Foreman a Kinshasa, in un incontro passato alla storia e ad oggi ricordato sui manuali come uno dei più grandi eventi sportivi di sempre.

Foreman era dato dai bookmaker come favorito, e la sua vittoria veniva data fino a tre volte più probabile di una sconfitta. Le quote erano influenzate dall’ultima sconfitta subita da Ali con Frazier, e dal fatto che Foreman aveva vinto il titolo mondiale battendo proprio Frazier. Vediamo la sintesi di quello che è stato lo spettacolo mediatico più famoso sicuramente degli   anni 70.
