The My Song sailboat is the passion of a ship owner

What drives an experienced sailor owner who after having developed a working activity with excellent results at some point in his life, decides to sell his established industry to venture into the construction of a large 40 meter long (130 feet) sailing boat to be used for long cruises and for sailing competitions if not the true and authentic passion for the sea and sailing.

This owner already owns a smaller sailboat called My Song 84 feet long (25 meters) very famous among sailing enthusiasts for having won many regattas including the extraordinary Maxi Rolex Cup in the Racing-Cuising category.

The new My Song because it retains the name of other boats of the same owner including the 25-meter My Song, was built in the prestigious Finnish boatyard of Baltic Yacht. While the design of the water lines was carried out by the American study of Reichel and Pugh, the same who designed the My Song of 25 meters while the deck and interior design was taken care of by the Milanese study Nauta Design.

In practice it was chosen the best for the construction of this boat the final result could only be exceptional. In fact, it is currently one of the most beautiful sailing boats in the world and among the most technologically advanced of the moment.

Studied, not to be too heavy, its weight is about one hundred tons are nothing compared to the size and size of the boat including 41 tons are the weight of the ballast.

This was possible because for the construction of the hull was used technologically advanced composite material with a high percentage of carbon.
A special engine propulsion system allows the boat to advance even without the sail system with a propeller foot that descends when the engine needs to be used and salt hiding inside the hull when it is necessary to sail in this way the resistance to the movement is the minimum possible by improving performance. This installed system is called “retractable Propulsion System” by Baltic Yacht.

The boat is equipped with a retractable keel that can go from 7 to 4 meters of draft. The My Song lifting keel, at 36.25 tons, comes from the world of racing yachts. It tapers from top to bottom, which improves hydrodynamic performance and reduces the wet surface, saving about two seconds per mile in straight speed, says Nauta Yachts project director, Martino Majno.

Regarding the structure and equipment of the sail system, the owner can choose between two basic configurations between the regatta and the cruise. The basic sail plan is composed of a 530 square meter mainsail; genoa 380 square meters; gennaker 1,300 square meters. With regatta trim the boat can sail at speeds higher than the actual wind present at that moment because these big boats manage to build apparent wind and therefore great speed even in close-hauled sailing.

With this boat we have chosen to build a simple flat and clean 8.52 meters wide deck that starts around the center of the boat and continues almost in compliance to the stern with a little intrusive tuga and where there are only the necessary things for the management of the boat. We tried to find a compromise solution to build a boat suitable for long cruises and at the same time competitive to win regattas.

“Our specialization is to combine these two things together, but we have never done it to this point. Never. The result was made possible by the extraordinary capabilities of the manufacturer says Mario Pedol of Nauta Yachts also adds the combination of performance, elegance, comfort and functionality is perhaps the most distinctive feature of My Song. Everything has been designed and built to be light even the cable supports and plant passages are made of carbon “.
Even the electronics are perfectly hidden with clear control screens present only in front of the wheel of the helmsman. There are also portable instruments that are used by the crew during the regattas.

The interiors have a cozy, warm style, but at the same time, with a typically marine taste as requested by the owner, are characterized by the presence of a full beam saloon a large master cabin in the bow and behind this cabin is a second smaller bedroom that can also be used as a simple study. Then there are two other double cabins that are located aft of the salon.

The research of the materials used to avoid increasing the weight of the boat was very accurate. In particular, for the creation of floors and ceilings, the choice fell on a resin and linen composite, thus rediscovering the use of natural fibers.

“My vision of the last My Song was for a yacht that would be extremely light, fast and easy to handle: a true competitor of superyacht regattas,” says the boat owner, adding that this had to balance with a “welcoming interior” , comfortable and luxurious “.

All the objectives have been achieved and all the ship owner’s needs have been met. Launched in the summer of 2016 already in 2017 the first attestations of esteem arrived, in fact, the My Song 130 feet won two prizes in the ShowBoats Design Awards 2017. The award for the most innovative yacht and the one for the best Exterior Design and Styling .

It is certainly an important recognition for the Milanese Nauta Yacht Design studio and the study by Reichel and Pugh.

Now we just have to wait until the new My Song equals and exceeds the number of sports victories of the older homonymous even if in a different sailing class. In this regard, the shipowner has issued the following declaration. “The new boat is challenging and challenging, of course it takes time to get to know it and be carried out at its best”. Like all purebred horses born to run, then win.
